Mental Health Covid

MHCOVID - an online "living" systematic review on changes in the prevalence of mental health problems due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken to limit them

The project was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) as part of the NRP 78 initiative.

We assume that both the length and intensity of social isolation in the context of physical distancing measures and the fear of infection can have serious negative effects on the mental health of the general population. However, a comprehensive evidence base is currently lacking, meaning that this assumption can neither be confirmed nor refuted. It is currently unclear a) how high the prevalence of mental health problems is in the general population and in specific subgroups worldwide in the various phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, b) whether and how the extent of the pandemic and the intensity of the measures taken to contain the pandemic affect the psyche and c) which characteristics of the population and context modify this influence on the psyche.

We systematically record all published studies worldwide that measure the impact of the pandemic on mental health in the general population using standardized instruments. As of February 2022, we have recruited 117 experienced physicians, psychologists, statisticians and students as volunteers, which has enabled us to screen more than 40,000 publications for relevance and extract extensive data sets from almost 300 articles on a specially adapted online platform. We present regular updates of our results on our website.
